His Excellency Ambassador, Michael Collins

Michael Collins has served as Ireland’s ambassador to the United States since August 14, 2007. Born in Dublin June 25, 1953, he earned a BSc from Trinity College, Dublin in 1978, and attended Blackrock College’s Institute of Public Administration. He also served at the Consulate General of Ireland in New York (1982) and at headquarters’ political division in 1986. In 1993, he was transferred to the Irish embassy in Washington, DC, before becoming Ireland’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and the United Emirates in 1995. In 1999, he was made Ireland’s Ambassador to the Czech Republic and Ukraine. In 2001, he became second secretary general, Department of the Taoiseach, with responsibility for international and European Union affairs and particularly the Northern Ireland Peace Process. He remained in this post until his appointment as Ambassador to the United States.

Simon Coveney, TD

Minister for Agriculture

Born in Cork in June 1972, Simon Coveney holds a B.Sc. in Agriculture and Land Management from Royal Agriculture College, Gloucestershire. He was also educated at Clongowes Wood College, County Kildare; University College Cork, and Gurteen Agricultural College, County Tipperary. He was appointed Minister for Agriculture, Marine and Food on March 9, 2011. He represents and Cork South Central constituency. He was first elected to Dáil Éireann in a by-election for Cork South Central in October 1998, following the untimely death of his father, Hugh Coveney TD. He has served in a number of senior Party and Oireachtas positions. Simon served as a member of the European Parliament between 2004 and 2009. He is also a former member of Cork City Council.

Senator Lorraine Higgins

Senator for Galway East

Living in Athenry, Lorraine first contested the 2009 Galway County Council elections where she secured over 800 first preferences on her first time election campaign. She was the Labour Party’s General election candidate in Galway East in 2011 and was subsequently nominated to the Seanad in May 2011. She is an active member of Junior Chamber International Galway and currently holds the role of Membership Officer.

Ruth was born and brought up in Dublin, was a student at University College Dublin, a post- graduate at Cambridge University and now lives in London. A historian and prize-winning biographer (the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Victor Gollancz: a biography), her recent non-fiction books include True Brits: inside the Foreign Office, The Pursuit of Reason: The Economist 1843-1993, The Faithful Tribe: an intimate portrait of the loyal institutions (shortlisted for the Channel 4 political book prize) and Newspapermen: Hugh Cudlipp, Cecil Harmsworth King and the glory days of Fleet Street.
